Minsk is the capital city of the Republic of Belarus, an eastern European country bordered by Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania and Latvia. The area that is Minsk today was settled by Slavs in the 9th century and over time, changed hands frequently. Students taking Russian courses in Minsk will find that the country has much to offer, with 16 museums, 11 theaters and 139 libraries. Take time to visit the National Library of Belarus, which houses some of its collections in a unique piece of architecture, a glass geometric ball. For history buffs, make sure to visit the Belarusian State Museum of the Patriotic War with a collection including homemade weapons, documents, photographs and more. Students will find that the climate in Minsk is never dull, with humid summers and wet winters. For nightlife in Minsk, students can enjoy nightclubs with singing and dancing acts, or enjoy some time in one of the local casinos. While Minsk is an active city, it is not at all overwhelming, with a distinct, welcoming charm. Students attending Russian school in Minsk might enjoy a visit to see the circus, but be sure to buy your tickets in advance, as it is a popular attraction. There are many beautiful historic buildings in Minsk, including the Holy Spirit Cathedral, started in 1642 and completed in the 18th century. Shopping in Minsk ranges from department stores, to open air fairs and markets, where hunting for bargains is encouraged and expected.
