The town of Boquete Panama is nestled in the green mountain highlands of Panama. It sits about 60 kilometers from the border of Costa Rica. Because of its altitude, Boquete’s climate is considerably cooler than that of the lowlands, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Students taking Spanish courses in Boquete will quickly learn that Boquete is known for its friendly people. The rich soil in the area makes Boquete the perfect setting for growing flowers, citrus fruits, vegetables and coffee. Farmers began settling this area towards the end of the 19th century. Boquete was officially founded in 1911. The nearby landscape is worth exploring further. Students might enjoy a hike up and over the dormant volcano, Volcan Baru. For those not interested in the hike, consider a jeep ride. Boquete is located on the eastern side of this volcano, which became a National Park in 1976 and is home to over 250 species of birds as well as a wide range of wildlife including jaguars, monkeys and sloths and deer. Students can take a white water rafting trip or visit a coffee plantation. While immersed in Spanish school in Boquete students will find themselves not only exploring the beautiful flora and fauna of the area, but also sampling the delicious cuisine. Whether looking for traditional Panamanian faire, or something more international, Boquete has a large number of restaurants offering a great variety. Whether looking for an adventure, or an educational activity, students will find both in Boquete.
