St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter I of Russia. It was the capital of the Russian Empire for over 200 years. Built by Italian architects, the city has a distinct European feel, with its neoclassical and baroque architecture. Students will enjoy soaking in the culture of this magnificent city. With hundreds of museums and theaters, there is much to see and do. Students taking Russian courses in St. Petersburg will want to spend time getting to know this city that was the home to cultural figures like Gogol, Tchaikovsky and Dostoevsky. Called the Venice of the north for its network of canals, St. Petersburg keeps its Russian identity in tact with color palaces and ornate churches.
