Ravenna a small city located on the Adriatic coast in northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. It briefly served as the capital of the Roman Empire, and it was in this city that Dante finished The Divine Comedy before his death in 1321. He referred to Ravenna as a symphony of color. Students enrolled in Italian school in Ravenna will find that this small city with its cobblestone streets is known for its colorful mosaics. These treasures are located primarily in the historic center of Ravenna, in a variety of churches, museums and mausoleums. They represent early Byzantine civilization. It may be worthwhile to take a guided tour of the mosaics in order to learn about their history and the symbolism they portray. Much of Ravenna can be traveled on foot quite easily, but students might enjoy using one of the free bicycles located throughout the city for those who prefer not to walk. Students can expect the climate in Ravenna to be hot and humid in the summer, and cold in the winter, with strong winds coming in from the north. With cafes and bars on virtually every corner, students will find this quaint town to be a charming and beautiful introduction to Italy. Students taking a break from Italian courses in Ravenna will enjoy dining in the local restaurants where fresh pasta and fresh fish are typically on the menu. For those looking to do some shopping, there are several boutiques throughout the town, including designer fashions among other things. Ravenna is truly a ‘colorful’ representation of Italy’s culture, history and beauty.
