Tampa is located on the west coast of the U.S. state of Florida on the Gulf Coast Bay. Tampa was found by Spanish explorers in the early 16th century, but there were no permanent American or European settlements in the area until 1824, when the US Army established a frontier outpost called Fort Brooke in the area. Prior to that Tampa was once inhabited by various indigenous cultures, most recently the Tocobaga. Today, Tampa is a part of the metropolitan area known as the Tampa Bay Area, which has several professional sports teams including American football, hockey, and baseball. In addition to great professional sports, Tampa has also been voted one of the best outdoor cities in the U.S., meaning there is plenty to do whether you want to head to the beach for a swim, go for a jog, or explore the city on foot. Students considering attending English school in Tampa will enjoy Tampa’s warm weather and subtropical climate. The summers in Tampa can be very humid, however, and often lead to mid-afternoon thunderstorms throughout the summer.
