Salamanca is located about 2.5 hours northwest of Madrid and is a historic university town and lies by the Tormes River on a plateau. Salamanca is considered by many to be one of the most amazing Renaissance cities in all of Europe. The city has seen many changes in power over its long history; it was first conquered by the Carthaginians in the third century B.C., it then became a Roman settlement before being ruled by the Moors until the eleventh century. The University of Salamanca, still educating students today, is one of the oldest universities in Europe-- it was founded in 1218. Students interested in studying Spanish courses in Salamanca will love exploring the city's extraordinary architecture; you can get started at the Old Cathedral which was constructed in the twelfth century and the New Cathedral constructed between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.
