Leeds is a city and metropolitan borough located in West Yorkshire, England; it is the largest center for business, legal, and financial services outside London and is the financial, cultural and commercial center of the area. The name Leeds derives from "Loidis", the name given to a forest covering most of the kingdom of Elmet, which existed during the 5th century into the early 7th century. The city and surrounding district are moderately sized, with over 700,000 inhabitants. Students interested in studying at an English school in Leeds will enjoy the many activities that the area has to offer, including heading to Millennium Square, a great public space home to some breathtaking architecture, concerts, ice skating (in the winter), and Christmas markets. Students taking English courses in Leeds can also explore hidden gems of the city, such as St John's Church which was built just before the English Civil War and has beautiful gardens surrounding it and a lovely interior as well. For students interested in art, the Leeds Art Gallery and The Henry Moore Institute, offer many examples of both modern and classical art. There are many fun markets in Leeds that students can visit to practice their language skills: try visiting both Kirkgate Market (the largest traditional market in Europe) and the Corn Exchange. Lastly, for students visiting Leeds from November to January, visiting the Leeds Christmas Illumination—the UK's biggest display—is quite a treat, and lights up the entire city with beautiful lights.
