Although Geneva is not the capital, nor the largest city in Switzerland, it is widely known as a major influencer on international diplomacy and justice; it has been home to the headquarters of the International Red Cross and has had major importance in the success of the United Nations and World Health Organizations as well. Geneva is located along the banks of the largest Alpine lake in Europe, Lake Geneva, and has a history dating as far back as 121 BC. Nowadays, Geneva still preserves this history in its many museums, galleries, and in its famous university founded by John Calvin, the University of Geneva.
