The city of Ely is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, England. The city’s origins are tied to the abbey built in 673 AD. The abbey was destroyed in 870 by Danish invaders. It was rebuilt over 100 years later. Students enrolled in English school in Ely should be sure to visit the Ely Cathedral. It plays host to thousands of visitors from all over the world each year. It is comprised of a blend of architectural styles and the stone and glass work is beautiful. The cathedral is also home to the only museum that is dedicated to stained glass. The city’s most famous resident was Oliver Cromwell. Students can visit the only surviving Cromwell residence, which includes a variety of tours led by costumed guides. Students taking English courses in Ely might enjoy spending time at the waterside area of Ely. Walk along the river, dine at one of the eateries, or listen to music in the Jubilee Gardens. There are many diversions to keep guests busy in this lovely town. The Jubilee Gardens are located near the center of Ely. Bands play at the gardens every Sunday during the summer. Head up to the High street area to find a great mix of independent shops that offer everything from chocolates to fine arts.
