More about studying in Bilbao »
Bilbao can be found in the north central part of Spain. Founded in the early 14th century, Bilbao became the capital city of the province of Biscay in 1602. The city has experienced significant growth and revitalization in recent times, with an updated infrastructure including the airport terminal, the rapid transit system and the tram line. Students studying Spanish courses in Bilbao will enjoy the oceanic climate, with mild winters and summers. As part of the modernization of the city, the Guggenheim Museum was constructed, and the building itself is considered a masterpiece by architecture experts across the world. The museum is home to a portion of the Solomon R. Guggenheim modern art collection. The Alhondiga is another example of the rejuvenation of the area. Once a wine warehouse built in 1909, the space has been converted into a multi-purpose venue were students will find a multi-screen cinema complex, restaurants, a library and more. Students enrolled in Spanish school in Bilbao can take a break and stroll along the river walkways, go shopping at one of the many designer stores, or enjoy sampling the cuisine at local restaurants. With beaches nearby, students might also try scuba diving, surfing, or sailing. A visit to old town offers a glance into the city’s past with its old buildings and windy roads. Among other things, there are many privately owned boutiques, a market, and the St. James Cathedral to explore. Students will enjoy experiencing the varied cultures of the area, and participating in everything this lively, growing metropolis has to offer.
