Antigua, Guatemala was once the capital of Spanish colonial Central America, and is now one of the most popular tourists spots in Guatemala. Students interested in studying Spanish courses in Antigua will have a wonderful time exploring the city, including its ancient architecture and history. The city, which is mainly laid out in a grid, centers around the famous Parque Central in the heart of the city. The park has many pathways, trees, and a beautiful fountain in it, and is often a central location for musicians and people to gather and just relax. Visitors and students at a Spanish school in Antigua should certainly take the time to take a walking tour, whether guided or not, and can’t forget to visit “El Mercado” or, The Market, on a Sunday, Monday or Thursday which are the busiest days. There are foods, gifts, meats, and more in the market and this area is great for students interested in practicing their Spanish in an authentic setting. The last thing that students should not miss during their trip to Antigua, is a journey to the Polcaya Volcano which remains active to this day. It is a popular hiking activity and provides beautiful views of Guatemala from the top.
