NBL is located in Ueda city where the 1998 Winter Olympics was held. Shinkansen (bullet train) allows you to travel to Tokyo in 70 minutes. Ueda city is a traditional industrial city in Japan and this area’s living expenses is much cheaper than Tokyo, Osaka and other big cities.
NBL is situated in the heart of Nagano and surrounded by beautiful nature and a great environment for studying. There is a famous ski area in Nagano too, and it takes about 1 hour by car, so we have a lot of students who come to NBL to learn Japanese and enjoy skiing and snowboarding together.
I liked the classes and the teachers. They were very nice and helpful. I improved a little bit in Japanese. Location was nice too, I like the countryside.
However the housing was a disaster. I was staying in the school dormitory and I was really shocked by the lack of sanitation: so many cockroaches everywhere which was disgusting, the kitchen was very dirty and infested with insects. The dustbins were not changed daily so it was smelly. There were no mirrors or soaps in the bathrooms. The floor in my room was dirty when I moved in.
I would come over again because I enjoyed the classes but definitely not in those dormitories.
Homestays are carefully selected and offer students the opportunity to learn more about the local culture in a comfortable setting while studying Japanese in Nagano. If you have special requests or diet restrictions (because of religion or health reasons), please let us know in advance. You must check out 1 day after your classes end (usually a Saturday).
