The Academia has a colonial design, with interior patio, 21 classrooms, video room with amplification equipment, library, teachers room, wireless internet service, a terrace with a fantastic view of the Pichincha volcano (active volcano with close to 14.000 feet) access and bathroom for wheelchair users and elevator; participants are half from Europe, half from the United States. The majority are professionals and university students.
One of the important features of the Academia experience is that unlike other study abroad programs which require some measure of fluency on the part of the student, students with little or no Spanish may enroll and study for as long as time permits. Our excellent testing program allows placement of students in classes at their exact level, and weekly evaluations make it possible to continue to move students through their weekly classes in such a way that they are continually challenged, but not frustrated by being slightly ahead or slightly behind their classmates. The number of participants in any class is never over five and is frequently smaller. Students move in and out of classes on a weekly basis depending on their ability and their motivation for outside study. Our teachers are all native speakers of Spanish, who have received extensive training in the teaching of their language to adult learners.
The focus of the Academia Latinoamericana de Español is on communication and our methodology involve a natural approach, total physical response, language experience approach, directed reading thinking activities, and the writing process. An integrated, topical curriculum approach reinforces vocabulary.
Our teaching program has been designed under the guidelines of the Instituto Cervantes, the placement testing of the OPI (Oral Proficieny Interview), in combination with the ACTFL model of 9 levels of proficiency: absolute beginner to superior. Highly structured grammar lessons, interactive activities,
conversation and written exercises. Specific homework assignments are given daily.
The general schedule will be as follows:
8:30 / 10:30 am: classes and lectures
10:30 / 11:00 am: break
11:00 / 13:00 am: classes and lectures
This will provide 20 classes of 60 minutes each. Teachers will also change each week so that students will have a significant variety of expertise within each week.
FIRST SESSION
This first session will be specifically dedicated to studying Grammar and to practicing Reading, Comprehension and Writing style.
GRAMMAR: Each student will study linguistic structures, grammatical functions and rules of Spanish. It has a very pragmatic approach in combination with a wide range of consolidation activities that are selected to reinforce the lesson of the day.
READING COMPREHENSION: The development of this skill will be carried out with real texts or didactically created ones that are coordinated to the lecture. With the help and guidance of the teacher, each student interpret the texts orally and in writing to further aid their comprehension. Orthographic rules, vocabulary and punctuation will also be reviewed.
SECOND SESSION
This second session will be dedicated to studying oral comprehension and expression.
ORAL COMPREHENSION: The development of this skill will be carried out with real and didactically created documents that are designed to coordinate with the lecture. The student, with the help of the teacher and different comprehension activities, will then interpret the audiovisual documents orally and/or in writing.
ORAL EXPRESSION: The student will participate interactively in a variety of different activities conducted by the teacher, such as presentations, debates, mini-plays, etc. These activities will be carried out with different materials proposed by the teacher or the students, depending on everyone's necessities or interests. Spanish Phonetics (pronunciation, the rhythm of the sentences and so on) will also be studied.
This new program is based upon cultural elements as well as the language itself, thus adding a valuable dimension of the Latin American Culture.
Short field trips will be hosted to different sites within Quito or close by the city (markets, museums, cathedrals, historical monuments), along with dancing classes, cooking lessons, lectures, etc.

The city of Quito is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by the snow capped peaks of the Andes, it is a Franciscan city and surprisingly friendlier and safer feeling than other large Latin American cities. Furthermore, it has kept its colonial charm in spite of growing to the size of 1 million.
The temperature is determinate by the altitude and the averages 60-70 during the day and 50 during the night.
The Academia Latinoamericana in QUITO, is set in the residential area of La Carolina, next to La Carolina
park (great place for students since they can practice sports such us soccer, basket, volley, jogging, aerobics, roller skating, etc and about 10.000 quitenos practice sports specially Saturday and Sunday), it is also close to the Metropolitan park, the biggest green area in Quito, which is a great place to go in order to do some jogging, running, mountain biking and have a fantastic view of the valley of Quito.
The school is located is a small street called Noruega, which is a residential area, full of good restaurants,
galleries, five shooping centers, many hotels around the school, several internet cafes, and much more!
Everyone working at the school is very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. My teacher was wonderful and I improved my Spanish because of her. I also appreciated that the school organized weekly trips for the students. I didn’t stay with a host family so cannot speak to that. Quito’s school is located in a safe area of the city with many eateries nearby.
Something that I didn’t like, but didn’t color my experience at all, was that class never started on time. I realize that I am carrying my culture’s expectations about time with me, but I still felt that I should have gotten the full 4 hours of class daily.
I liked the teacher and the family, but as school was closed, it was not the thing I was looking for, and I hadnt been told the truth right before
Show details » Read more...I liked the intimacy of the classes (we were just 3 students and stayed together as a group for the 3 weeks I attended classes). We spoke exclusively in Spanish, which was a great way to get used to speaking the language. The teachers were wonderful, different in their styles, but very personable. I enjoyed our discussions about culture, politics, science and the environment. There was homework every night - it felt like the right amount to reinforce the day's instruction.
Show details » Read more...I felt very welcomed by the school as well as the host family. They all had so much patience to help me master the basics of Spanish. I would definitely recommend to book private lessons as well as home stay, it is a great way to learn about the Ecuadorian culture and habits. Loved every minute!
Show details » Read more...Teachers were excellent, very small classes, 1-to-1 sessions helped me hugely. Loved the fact that Ecuadorian Spanish is slow and clear - and Quito has also been one of my favourite capital cities in Latin America.
