English Outdoors, LLC (Outdoor Learning Classes)
This program offers the interaction and liveliness of group classes as well as the personal attention of a private teacher. Students take the Morning Class and 3 extra individual lessons (of 45 minutes each) in the afternoon, during which they will be able to focus on areas of weakness or discuss a topic of special interest. Classes take place in authentic locations all over the city (parks, gardens, museums, markets, public atriums...).
This course allows students to learn and progress faster with one-on-one attention from their assigned teacher. A needs analysis/interview is conducted prior to the course in order to identify the student’s areas of weakness and overall goals of the lessons.
Topics covered during the 1-to-1s can include:
• Business
• Exam preparation
• Conversation
• Pronunciation
• Grammar
• Areas of interest (American culture, politics, current events….)
Class Times:
• Monday to Friday 9:30am – 12:45pm for group course outdoors
• + Individual classes at flexible times in the afternoon
Our new English Outdoors concept is specifically designed to immerse students in NYC life and culture, giving them the unique opportunity to practice their English in authentic NYC settings. Our morning English classes take place in locations all over the city, allowing students to learn English and make the most of New York City.
Instead of being in the same classroom every day, students learn in famous and authentic places such as Bryant Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Industry City, Essex Market, Central Park and more. Locations have been carefully chosen based on comfort, space, ease of access, points of interest close by, proximity of public restrooms, etc. English Outdoors classrooms include a range of indoor locations for rainy/cold days, so lessons are guaranteed every day, whatever the weather.
With this interactive classroom experience, students get the added bonus of a hands-on approach to learning about NYC.
HOW IT WORKS:
• All students' levels of English are tested online before arrival via a multiple choice test and a speaking test on Zoom.
• Students get a weekly timetable by email and meet on location daily.
• Teachers and students join a Whatsapp group to stay connected.
• Teachers utilize the coursebook, supplementary materials, and mini-whiteboards to target key grammar and vocabulary points.
• They also use technology in the form of iPads and smartphones to further engage students.
• Students complete homework assignments regularly and are assessed on course language objectives weekly.
• Classes are rich in cultural content and conversation.
• We recommend students have an international phone plan and bring a headset to make the most of the English Outdoors experience
DISCOVERY DAYS:
There are 2 Discovery Days per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On these unique & fun days, students are still in class but also on the move with their teacher, exploring an interesting part of the city or a museum or both! These days are also a great way to help build student fluency & confidence in English, whilst discovering a new part of the city.
A typical Discovery Day includes a 60-minute sit-down class, followed by a 90-minute walking tour or museum visit, and finally a stop at a cafe/bar or on location for a wrap up session on the day's class.
Examples of Discovery Days:
- American Art
- NY immigration
- 911 Revisited
- Modern Art
- Where America Began
- And many more!
NOTE:
• This course is available on a B1/B2 tourist visa or ESTA (20 lessons = 15 clock hours per week)

English Outdoors is an original and innovative concept of lessons outside sof the classroom, in locations all over the city, allowing students to sight-see and discover more of NYC while they study English.
Instead of being in a room with 4 walls, students learn in places such as Bryant Park, Union Square, Essex Market, Central Park, DUMBO, Industry City and more. The city is their classroom! Locations have been carefully chosen based on comfort, space, ease of access, proximity of public restrooms, etc. Alternative indoor locations are planned for rainy days, so lessons are guaranteed, every day, whatever the weather.
Being immersed in the city adds a unique element to the classroom experience. Instead of simply discussing NYC related topics in a classroom, students can truly experience NYC life and culture first-hand in authentic settings. Classes are rich in cultural content and conversation and also include regular cultural and educational field trips around the city.
The nationality and age mix at English Outdoors, LLC (Outdoor Learning Classes) varies over different time periods, courses and levels. Throughout the year, the average age is 34. In the summer, the average age is 32.

I really liked the classes. Locations were interesting, I’ve seen many new places and had an opportunity to learn more about them. I enjoyed talking with my teacher and discussing some interesting aspects. It was both theoretical part where I was able to learn more and talk more fluently and practical part during when we saw some great places.

Show details » Read more...I didn’t need facilities or housing since I stayed at my daughter’s who’s been living in Brooklyn. Nor did I really needed different locations since I’m familiar with NYC thanks to my long stays over the years. For the rest of it, I wanted to perfectionate my spoken English and I made the best of what is possible to achieve in two weeks. Improving my fluency, learning idioms, the way natives speak was useful and fun. I liked everything except the weather :))
Show details » Read more...I was in the advanced group, and in one week I learned a few things, it was pretty good to have classes outdoors and not to be in a classroom. We were a group of seven teenagers and that was good, because the teacher could help us all. The afternoons were great, because we were on our own, we could do whatever we wanted (with limits of course), and the activities were the best to do! We discovered so much!
I wasn’t in a host family, I was at a friend’s, so I don’t know how it feels like, but of course, we had work to do. I had two days to prepare a presentation on a random subject about NYC, and I was kind of stressed about it (I’m a stressed person in general), and we had a little bit of presure for the final test (but I understand we weren’t in vacation but here to work).
The locations were always great I loved it !
The teacher is amazing
I really liked the fact that we were not a lot of students, only 4. We could learn a lot in a small Amount of time
.
The outdoor classes is a really interesting concept. We could discover new places in New York every day. The hours of classes are perfect from 10 to 1.30, free afternoon to discover the city.
The level of classes was not very advanced though. If you are looking for advanced English, this program will probably not suit you
The housing is amazing +++, lovely family, perfect neighborhood. This was a really good point
I liked the classes size - 2-3 students, very intensive schedule. Teachers were very friendly and helpful, always willing to explain any queries or doubts. Fantastic location of the school. I liked Fridays - the summary of the week + program for the weekend and the coming week.
Show details » Read more...There was a problem with elementary course because I was the one student. The teachers were expert and patient, but there was not sufficiently coordination between them.
Show details » Read more...I had a wonderful experience in Brooklyn. Maybe is much better if the school have two difference teachers for intensive program.
All day with a single teacher, its too much.
The classes were great (small like they promised), and the location was perfect. I didn't live in the shared student house, but I went there a couple of times and it was not clean.

Show details » Read more...I just can recommend the Brooklyn School of Languages to everyone! The school was very nice and all the staff were very friendly, and this also includes the activity leaders and the teachers. The activities were very nice, and I enjoyed the workshops which took place twice a week. The host family was very nice and friendly. There was absolutely nothing I didn’t like.

Show details » Read more...School is very well located, nice and new infrastructure, amazing view and friendly teacher.
Show details » Read more...The teacher, the location and the facilities were wonderful but the classes were not my level. I think the grammar taught was too easy but I could learn some new vocabulary. The activities we did with the school were good. The location of the house was good because I could walk to the school but the problem was that my bedroom was next to a very noisy highway and I had to wear earplugs to sleep. Besides, I think the house wasn't clean enough. The owner of the house didn't want us to cook any meat at home because he is vegetarian. I think I should know that beforehand.
