Course description

Experience “The American Classroom” in this four-week academically rigorous program of university preparation. Students combine tested language learning techniques in the classroom with American cultural experiences to prepare for the TOEFL exam. SAT prep is provided by a veteran test prep expert with over 20 years of experience.

In this program, students will spend most mornings in a traditional classroom setting improving their English skills and preparing for the SAT and the TOEFL exam. Afternoons, evenings and weekends are filled with “passive” language learning, using a combination of fun activities as well as cultural, historical, and academic experiences.

Academic Bridge students will also enjoy many different kinds of outings, including camping, visiting premier American universities, outdoor Maine fun (kayaking, whale watching, artist colony visit etc.) and many more. All of these activities are designed to improve the students English skills and prepare them for the American education system, while they are having fun.

Objectives:

Demonstrate improved English proficiency using the Reading Plus assessment software to determine a student’s reading level at the beginning and end of the program.
Show improvement in participant SAT scores by testing at the beginning and end of the program.
Methods:

45 hours of classroom English Instruction for Academics and TOEFL
15 hours of classroom SAT preparation
Morning English classes leveled by ability
Use Reading plus active reading software to quickly improve reading levels
Afternoon “passive” English instruction using sports, games and cultural experiences
Extended excursions and trips to introduce American history, academics and culture
Current Hyde domestic and international student interns act as “language partners”
Continuous programming – filling the student’s entire day

Hyde is located on the original Hyde family estate of shipbuilder John S. Hyde on 145 beautiful acres in Bath, Maine. Facilities include:

the historic Hyde Mansion and Chase Academic Wing, home to classrooms, offices, and the library
the Carriage house, home to classrooms and offices
an all-inclusive Athletic and Student Life center, “The Joe”

The campus features a ropes course with zip line, state-of-the-art music recording studio donated by Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, an indoor climbing wall, cross country ski trails, two athletic fields, a football field and track and practice field, and two ponds.

Visa support

We cannot apply for visas on behalf of students. However, the school can supply you with all the documentation you need to support your visa application.

If you are studying full time in the United States for more than 18 hours per week, you will receive an I-20 that you need to submit to the US embassy along with your F-1 student visa application. The I-20 has a SEVIS tracking number on it. Students who wish to apply for a student visa must pay the SEVIS fee online before going to the US embassy or consulate for their visa interview.

Your I-20 will be sent to your home address by regular mail at no charge to you.

Please note that United States law states that an I-20 can only be issued to students who intend to pursue full-time English language studies. United States law does not permit students to study part-time with an F-1 Student Visa. If you are studying for less than 18 hours per week, you have to apply for a Visitor Visa (B1/B2) on your own.
